KDK's Consulting Services

Philosophy and Purpose

KDK Consulting was created to build upon the strength of our grantor/grantee relationships and to help nonprofits overcome organizational and strategic challenges, otherwise not developed in a traditional grantor/grantee relationship.

KDK Consulting is to help facilitate organizational growth and strength, not to dictate strategy.

Services Provided

KDK Consulting includes individualized technical assistance with our grantees in the following areas:

  • Fund Development
  • Volunteer Management
  • Communications
  • Research & Data Analysis
  • Strategic Planning
  • Collaborative efforts

KDK recognizes the strengths and limitations of our offered expertise. This stated, KDK, is open to assisting in the identification of other capacity building resources to reach the needs and goals of our grantees.

Description of Consulting Process

As part of KDK-Harman Foundation, KDK Consulting provides its services to its grantees at no charge. Our services are exclusive to our portfolio of grantees as KDK's high engagement activities rest upon developing mutual trust, respect and confidence. We have found that the best predictor of successful partnerships is a shared commitment as well as leaders who are ready and able to lead a long-term effort to achieve tangible results.

KDK Consulting employs a staged engagement model that allows us to tailor each project to grantee needs. Although every consulting effort is unique, our engagements typically include the following phases:

Apply for Services – Submission of a one-page project proposal by grantee indicating:

    • Background information on proposed project
    • Identification of assistance necessary
    • Objectives to be met by the consultant; and
    • Estimated project completion

Assessment and Analysis – KDK Consulting meets with the grantee to diagnose the current situation and define how we will partner to achieve specific goals.

Strategy Development and Planning – Together, KDK Consulting and grantees conduct analyses to surface critical issues, evaluate solutions, develop recommendations, and craft an action plan.

Implementation – Together, partners map how to execute the plan, launch implementation, adjust the implementation plan based on preliminary results.

Exit – KDK Consulting gradually transitions out of the engagement once the project goals have been completed or have the momentum to succeed. We confirm that our partnering grantee has or can rapidly acquire the capacities it needs and put in place appropriate monitoring/accountability processes.

At the end of each phase, KDK Consulting revisits our mutual commitments with our grantees. KDK realizes engagement in capacity building is challenging and requires time, patience, and persistence. Although we often see the immediate impact of our efforts, we seek enduring change.

Description of Selection Process

Submit your completed proposal (view Apply for Services) via e-mail to erica@kdk-harman.org.   The Foundation requires all proposals to be submitted electronically. If you have questions, we encourage you to contact us at 512.328.9400. KDK closely reviews each proposal to appropriately match each request with our resources. Interested applicants may view the Proposal Guidelines for KDK Consulting.

Clarity of Role

To avoid any potential conflict with respect to KDK's grant management role, the active consultant shall refrain from any grant making responsibilities and decisions surrounding their client (i.e. grantee organization) during the period of the consulting contract. Additionally, as the consulting services provided by the KDK-Harman Foundation are to be viewed as an in-kind gift of professional expertise purely independent from its grantmaking, KDK will not consider a grant proposal during a consulting engagement. KDK has adopted this policy to prevent any confusion of role or potential conflict of interest with respect to KDK's grantmaking functions.
