IN THE COMMUNITY Foundation 101
Foundation 101 Print E-mail

We are occasionally asked by generous and charitable individuals how to start and operate a foundation. We are very interested in sharing our experiences to help others in their philanthropic pursuits. We take great pleasure in networking with local foundations. We thoroughly enjoy the exchange of philanthropic strategy and ideas and learn from everyone that we meet.

When Janet first established KDK-Harman in early 2005, we met with several foundations in Austin and even spent half a day with the Meadows Foundation in Dallas. Everyone was very forthcoming in sharing their grant guidelines, operations manual, board meeting packets, evaluation reports and grant application forms. Over the last four years, we have incorporated their ideas and combined it with the materials from numerous grantmaking conferences that we have attended, and created our own process. To share what we have learned and developed, we host what we call, Foundation 101, for those just getting started or for those with established foundations that are looking to make changes to their process. As a "takeaway" the attendees receive a resource binder which includes our grant process forms and other relevant materials.

We offer advice regarding structure and operations, not legal or tax matters. Whether you are in the formative stages or currently operating, we would enjoy sharing our grantmaking experience. Equally, we are interested in learning about new ideas in the field of philanthropy with other funders.
