MEDIA ALERT: KDK-Harman Foundation awards local education-focused programs $349,000 this 2nd quarter. Grant recipients were as follows: Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders: For continued support of their Integrated Technology Curriculum at this all girls public school whose mission is to give young women the confidence and the skills necessary to pursue college educations and careers: $25,000 Austin Partners in Education (APIE): To support their Partners in Math Program. The mission of APIE is to create and foster effective community and school partnerships that provide all AISD students preparation for college and career: $55,000 Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas: This organization was one of two grant recipients for KDK-Harman's Academic Summer Program Excellence RFP. The Foundation was looking to fund 2009 summer programs that were academically rigorous and benefit primarily low-income students between the grades of elementary and high school. The Foundation was particularly interested in summer programs that utilize proven approaches to combating the “summer slide” and closing the achievement gaps of struggling students: $35,000 Capital IDEA: For continued support of the Teacher Pipeline Project, which addresses two critical community issues –first, the need for working men and women living in poverty to be able to receive the education they need to obtain a good job with benefits and an opportunity for advancement, and the second, the critical need in Central Texas for bilingual and special education teachers: $29,000 Capital IDEA: To provide capacity building support to this organization whose mission is to lift working families out of poverty through educational and workforce training: $50,000 Copperfield Elementary: To support the initial funding for MIND Institute’s Spatial Temporal (ST) Math + Music program at this Pflugerville ISD elementary school in Pflugerville, which provides both a math and music curricula to improve the math proficiency and a deep conceptual understanding of math concepts, as well as a fundamental training in music, to assist children, including those with limited language skills, achieve success in mathematics: $35,000 Citizen Schools: For continued support of their after-school program where students conduct hands-on learning projects and apprenticeships tied to academic and career achievement at Bedichek and Kealing Middle Schools: $25,000 E3 Alliance: To provide funding to hire a consulting firm for the Stimulus Technical Assistance Collaborative Project with the goal of leveraging local resources to acquire Federal Stimulus Grants for the Central Texas region: $20,000 Foundation Communities: This organization was one of two grant recipients for KDK-Harman's Academic Summer Program Excellence RFP. The Foundation was looking to fund 2009 summer programs that were academically rigorous and benefit primarily low-income students between the grades of elementary and high school. The Foundation was particularly interested in summer programs that utilize proven approaches to combating the “summer slide” and closing the achievement gaps of struggling students: $40,000 River Oaks Elementary: To support the initial funding for MIND Institute’s Spatial Temporal (ST) Math + Music program at this Pflugerville ISD elementary school in Pflugerville, which provides both a math and music curricula to improve the math proficiency and a deep conceptual understanding of math concepts, as well as a fundamental training in music, to assist children, including those with limited language skills, achieve success in mathematics: $35,000
KDK-Harman Foundation was founded by Janet E. Harman in December 2004. The Foundation provides financial and capacity-building resources to education-focused nonprofits that assist disadvantaged Central Texas families, with a focus on women, to help them achieve educational success. The ultimate goal of such funding is to transform their lives from poverty to financial independence to enable a better life for themselves and future generations. The Foundation supports programs within Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, Burnet and Llano counties. |
