CONSULTING Consulting Process

Consulting Process Print E-mail

KDK-Harman Consulting employs a staged engagement model that allows us to tailor each project to specific grantee needs and system dynamics. We work closely as partners to define and clearly delineate phases of work, each punctuated with actionable end-products. The consultant is an employee of KDK-Harman Foundation and the client is the grantee being provided the consulting services. The consultant and client work as a partnership during the engagement. Although every consulting effort is unique, our engagements typically include the following phases:

Apply for Services – Submission of a one-page project proposal by grantee indicating:

  • Background information on proposed project
  • Identification of assistance necessary
  • Objectives to be met by the consultant; and
  • Estimated project completion

Acceptance – If the requested project matches the resources and expertise of the Foundation, the consultant will contact the client to schedule the first meeting to draft the engagement contract. The contract will outline the project details, time commitment and time frame for completion.

Assessment and Analysis – Consultant meets with the client to diagnose the current situation and define how we will partner to achieve specific goals.

Strategy Development and Planning – Together, the consultant and client conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to identify critical issues, evaluate solutions, develop recommendations, and craft an action plan.

Implementation – Together, partners map how to execute the plan, launch implementation, and accordingly, adjust the implementation plan based on preliminary results.

Exit – KDK-Harman Consulting gradually transitions out of the engagement once the project goals have been completed or have the momentum to succeed. We confirm that our partnering grantee has or can rapidly acquire the capacities it needs. Finally, appropriate monitoring/accountability processes are established, as appropriate.

At the end of each phase, KDK-Harman Consulting revisits mutual commitments with client as specified in the consulting contract. KDK-Harman realizes engagement in capacity building is challenging and requires time, patience, and persistence. Although we often see the immediate impact of our efforts, we seek enduring change which is a long-term process.

Clarity of Role

To avoid any potential conflict with respect to KDK-Harman's grant management role, the active consultant shall refrain from any grantmaking responsibilities and decisions surrounding their client (i.e. grantee organization) during the period of the consulting contract. All consulting engagements will be completed within the timeframe of the grantee's grant contract. Additionally, as the consulting services provided by the KDK-Harman Foundation are to be viewed as an in-kind gift of professional expertise purely independent from its grantmaking, The Foundation has adopted this policy to prevent any confusion of role or potential conflict of interest with respect to KDK-Harman's grantmaking functions.
