Medical Marijuana Sales Rise in AZ During Global Pandemic

Most businesses are in the red due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, medical marijuana sales are greener than ever. Despite the outbreak, dispensaries continue to have longer queues and wait in lines.

Raul Molina runs the Mint Dispensary in Tempe, AZ. According to him, 20 April is National Cannabis Day. It brings a significant boost to medical marijuana sales, especially in Arizona.

The data for April sales have not rolled in. But, dispensaries sold 17,000 pounds of marijuana in March, according to the Arizona DHS. This is way more than the February figures, and April will only bring about a more significant increase in sales.

Medical marijuana salesman Raul Molina likened the sales of the first two weeks to people buying toilet paper at Costco. “Everybody came in trying to pick up as much as they could.”, said Molina.

Since the first reported case in the United States, Mint Dispensary has seen 50% more weed sales. Raul believes it is similar throughout Arizona.

“A lot of different dispensaries have had a shortage of product,” Molina said. “That was something we didn’t expect. We thought that Arizona had an ample supply. If there was a spike, if recreation happened or something like that, we were gonna be able to handle it.”

Gov. Doug Ducey declared medical marijuana an essential business. This paved the way for Mint and other dispensaries in Arizona.

Molina and his team try to encourage social distancing, making people stand 6 feet apart.

The massive sales volume shows a good sign for the times to come. “Taking that giant step forward where it’s recognized as an essential product during these times is beneficial to the discussion,” said Dimitri Downing, head of the Marijuana Industry Trade Association, or MITA.

Efforts are being made to legalize recreational marijuana in Arizona. The group, which is overseeing this, claims it has enough signatures to hold a ballot. Experts suggest that the current economic scenario may actually favor the movement.

The business increased thousands of jobs after becoming an essential business.

Dispensaries are happy to provide medical marijuana to those who need it. In these challenging times, they take care of people, while also staying in the green.

Kratom Is Legal In The U.S: Should It Be?

Some drugs are legal in the United States that we aren’t sure should be, and that includes the kratom drug. Kratom is a popular drug to take to help those who are trying to wean off of other drugs like heroin or prescription opioids.

Having a proper use doesn’t mean a drug is safe though, as we should know when it comes to the opioid epidemic that the United States has been facing for the last decade or so. Kratom grows in Southeast Asia and Africa. It has ban banned in some countries but is constantly smuggled.

Usually, the United States is pretty on par with the rest of the world when it comes to banning drugs, but for this one, they seemed to think that the benefits outweighed the risks.

People end up using kratom because it is fairly easy to obtain and can help them with their pain problems. Kratom can even be purchased as a tea to drink in public, and many people don’t know the risk they are taking as they drink it since it is considered okay to do so. People thought that about cocaine when they chewed the coca leaves too, didn’t they?

Apparently, kratom is only categorized as a dietary supplement in the United States which is insane since the Food and Drug Administration said it can cause all sorts of health issues and even cause withdrawal symptoms. The argument is that caffeine can do that as well.

Drug overdose deaths that involve kratom have gone up quite a bit in recent years, including phone calls to poison control about kratom. The rise has been pretty extreme for a short amount of time.

People tend to think that just because kratom is “natural” (many drugs are) that it is okay to take. That’s not true, especially if you take it along with other drugs like opioids. It’s risky and addictive and generally not safe to consume a lot of. Anything that can cause addiction should be monitored.

Yes, it can seem like it’s no worse than caffeine, but that truly isn’t the case. Caffeine doesn’t cause an overdose or make you more likely to find death when mixed with other drugs.

Too often we overlook the obvious problems because the label slapped on something implies that it is okay. Before using a substance do your own research and figure it out yourself.

The fight with Fentanyl on the border of Arizona

“There have been a lot of huge busts around the Mexican and United States Borders. These busts have contained record amounts of drugs lately including heroin and fentanyl an even cocaine. These drugs are peddled over the border to infiltrate our streets. They want to make money by selling drugs in our country instead of theirs,” – Tony Estrada, the Santa Cruz County sheriff.

On January 26th Customs and Borders Agents discovered more than just the alleged cucumbers they expected when inspecting a truck. Instead, they uncovered more than 250 pounds of fentanyl trying to be smuggled into the United States.

Fentanyl is a powerful opiate that is medically used to alleviate severe pains. It is reported to be 50-100 times stronger than morphine and 20-50 times stronger than heroin. It’ a very deadly drug that has led many people down the path of either addiction or overdose.

The state of Arizona obviously did not need this dangerous drug to cross their border. There have been tons of people who have overdosed from Fentanyl, and it is not a drug you should ever consider trying for fun. Because unfortunately, people get addicted, and it’s not a joke trying to overcome a Fentanyl abuse.

It can feel good to know that a community has been saved from an influx of a dangerous drug. Fentanyl is often laced in with many other drugs to bulk up the products for dealers. When that happens, addicts are not usually told that there is fentanyl mixed in. This leads to accidental drug overdose because even a tiny bit of fentanyl can lead to a strong high.

People who have never had fentanyl can overdose from the first dose. This is why fentanyl is very demonized in the media because it is scary even for addicts if they don’t know they’ve taken it.

Even though there have been so many drug busts lately that doesn’t really change how much drugs are affecting our country. Sadly as long as people are using there will be a demand for these drugs and they will find their way to the customer.

Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are considered to be the most dangerous and lethal category of opiates in the United States. This is mainly due to that tactic mentioned above of mixing fentanyl with other drugs and not telling the people they are selling to.

In 2018 all the tactical forces in San Luis started carrying Narcan. Narcan is the brand version of naloxone which is a drug that can actually reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. This can ultimately save lives because there is a limited window to save a life once there has been an opioid overdose because it stops breathing and hearts.

Opioid Prescriptions Almost Twice as Likely for Rural vs. Urban Americans

There is an opioid crisis in America that has spread throughout the whole country. The effects are different depending on where you live. One of the leading causes of this crisis is the lack of responsibility with prescription opioids.

It has been revealed rural Americans have a twice the chance of being prescribed painkillers when compared to people who live in the city.

Athenahealth is a significant data management firm. They researched this issue from 2014 to 2017. The research was helpful in showing if specific policies were tackling the crisis head-on. While there was some positive news, their conclusions spelled bad news for rural Americans.

It seems that opioid prescriptions have mostly been dropping in America. Overall, the average amount has decreased especially after March 2016. That month was when a new guideline was introduced that aimed to tackle to the opioid crisis.

According to the study, 7.4% of patients were prescribed opioids in the year 2014. Nationally, this number dropped by a whole percent in just two years. In 2016, the rate was at 6.4%.

However, this decrease has did not affect all the places in America equally. People who lived in rural areas had an 87% higher chance to get prescription for painkillers. These numbers are worrying. 2018 has provided another alarming statistic. Only 5% of people in the urban parts of American received the prescription. That is compared to 9% of people who live in the rural areas of America.

The message this research shows is that there is still a lot of work to be done for the crisis. In fact, many policies have a harder or slower time reaching the rural areas. There may need to be a change in policy philosophy when it comes to achieving rural areas.

It has also shown the habits of big prescribing companies. It seems these companies do not follow guidelines as closely in rural areas. They bend a lot more rules.

The results of this research overall have looked good. It is exciting to see opioids prescription drop. Since this is one of the major causes of the crisis, there is a lot of hope that a decrease in prescription can help crack holes in this crisis.

However, when it comes to rural America, this can have opposite effects. Rural areas do not have a lot of treatment facilities. When getting prescription for drugs people are addicted to becomes harder, it is not uncommon for people to turn to illegal drugs. Since they are addicted but cannot get help, they will find what it easier to get. A lot of times drugs that are even more dangerous, like heroin, become the easier drug.

It is important that if policies aim to reduce the number of prescriptions in rural America, they also make treatment for addiction more readily. Cheap rehab centers and treatment programs should be introduced in places rural Americans can go to.
